Body found off the coast of Sanibel positively identified as missing swimmer

UPDATE (5:00 PM)-- Sanibel Police released a statement confirming they have positively identified the body that was found off the Sanibel coast as Richard Straka.


UPDATE (4:00 PM) -- The Coast Guard confirms that they found a body of a deceased male off the southeast coast of Sanibel Island.

They are currently working with local law enforcement and the family of Richard Straka to attempt to identify the body.

The Coast Guard says a green raft was also found (unclear if the same area) by a good samaritan.


UPDATE (11:15 AM) -- Sanibel Police have shared photos related to the search of a missing swimmer off Sanibel.

The family of Richard Straka shared photos showing a portrait of Mr. Straka, a photo of him on the beach with the green raft, and a photo of the towel he had with him.

UPDATE (11/25) -- Sanibel Police have identified the missing swimmer as 63-year-old Richard Straka of Cleveland, Ohio.

High winds and rough seas caused the search to be called off overnight, but was scheduled to resume at 7 a.m. Monday.

The Coast Guard is searching for a man who went missing around Knapps Point in Sanibel on Sunday.

The Coast Guard confirms the man took his raft into the water near Knapps Point around 11:30 Sunday morning, but after missing for some time, his family contacted Sanibel Police and the Coast Guard.

Crews are actively searching for the man. The Coast Guard has marine units and a helicopter searching the area.
